Bible Reading Schedule History

In 2009, I tweaked the schedule slightly. We still read the Psalms on Sunday and Proverbs every day except Sunday. But now we read the Old Testament on Monday through Thursday and the New Testament on Friday and Saturday. Old Testament readings are 3-4 chapters per day; New Testament readings are 2-3 chapters per day.

In 2008, Our Daily Bread followed the daily Bible reading schedule I use on this blog. The only difference is that I started the schedule on Sunday, the first day of the week, and they started on Tuesday, the first day of the year.

In 1999 I developed a Bible reading schedule for our church that devoted a particular day of the week to one segment of Scripture:

Sunday | Psalms
Monday | Law
Tuesday | Old Testament History
Wednesday | Poetry / Wisdom
Thursday | Old Testament Prophecy
Friday | New Testament History
Saturday | New Testament Letters / Prophecy

In the past ten years I have adapted this several times for use by friends, family, and some churches. In fact, creating Bible reading schedules has become a kind of hobby. I enjoy figuring out new ways to help people see the broad view of the Bible.

I later adapted it to simplify the original version while maintaining the purpose of showing that all 66 books of the Bible are related to each other. It is easy to follow:

Sunday | Psalms
Monday–Friday | Old Testament
Saturday | New Testament
Proverbs | a few verses every day

I would love to hear your comments.
